The nomadic lifestyle has been around for centuries. However, when before nomads were known to move from one place to another in search of better food sources, now the definition has somehow shifted from a lifestyle to a career. When people speak of nomads these days, we think about those who have to go on continued travels for a living. For example, truckers.
Being a trucker is no easy feat. The trucking lifestyle entails making a living by transporting goods and other materials on land. Due to the requirements of the jobs, truckers face many challenges in their everyday lives.
What are the challenges?
- Isolation – Truckers usually make their journeys alone, regardless of the distance they drive. This can result in loneliness since there is very little human interaction during long drives, barring the ones made during rest stops.
- Health Issues – Long drives may seem inconsequential, but they can lead to a slew of health problems like poor eating habits and weight gain. With so much time spent driving and nothing else to do, some truckers find themselves snacking while on the road. That partnered with the lack of exercise can be detrimental to their health.
- External Factors – Working on the road means encountering some things that are out of one’s controls. The stress of the job is only worsened by traffic, terrible truck stops, and shipping delays.
How do you survive it?
A fully functioning truck with mini light bars is the bare minimum in the world of trucking. To survive better, truckers should consider putting together a kit with items that allow them to thrive in such harsh conditions.
- Cellphone and Charger – The pain of loneliness can be eased by making the occasional home calls. Truckers should invest in a phone with a good plan, and bring along a car charger and powerbank during their trips. Not only does this allow for better communication but also serve as entertainment during downtimes.
- Sustenance – There are numerous truck stops around the country, but it is best to stock up on food that can be easily eaten while driving as well. It is easy to give in to the temptation of buying cheap but unhealthy snacks. However, truckers should consider purchasing protein bars and other healthy alternatives to give them nutrients.
- First Aid Kit – In case of emergencies, it is always good to be prepared. A first aid kit should always be present in the truck. Inside should be a thermometer, painkillers, and cough medicine. The kit should also contain sterile bandages, various plasters, gloves, cleansing wipes, and tape.
- Hygiene Kit – To make the journey more comfortable, truckers should have spare clothing to change into what is appropriate for the weather. Not only that, but some items to freshen up with, like wipes, deodorant, and cologne, too.
Life as a trucker is full of uncertainties to navigate through. Instead of being caught off guard, truckers should prepare themselves for any and all possibilities to prevent themselves from incurring damage during the job.
